DITYFAQ
Have a question about a DITY/PPM move in our out of Alaska? Check out our list of frequently asked questions. If you don't find an answer to your question, contact our DITY move department at (907) 279 2571.
Why should I do a DITY move?
Most military members choose a DITY/PPM move for one or more of the following reasons:
- The ability to make money on a DITY move
- The ability to select a mover of their choice
- They are at or over their authorized weight.
Why is a DITY move a good option if I am close to or exceeding my weight allowance?
With a traditional full service move, you, as the service member, are responsible to pay overage charges if your shipment exceeds your authorized weight limit. With a DITY/PPM move, if you exceed your weight authorization, the costs of the DITY move MAY not exceed the reimbursement received from the military.
How long does it take for my goods to arrive at destination?
Transit times can vary based upon time of year, distance, and size of shipment. Your Continental counselor will provide you with an estimated transit time on the proposal that they will present to you.
As a general rule of thumb, transit times to these regions are:
Pacific Northwest 2-4 weeks
South/Midwest US 3-6 weeks
East Coast 4-7 weeks
Are there items that I am not allowed to ship?
Yes. We can provide you with a list of hazardous materials you are not allowed to include in your shipment.
Your TMO Counselor will also advise you of what items are not authorized by the military as part of a household goods shipment.
What do I do if I lose my weight tickets?
First of all, don't. That being said, if you do, Continental should be able to provide you copies of the weight tickets that you can use to submit. Your TMO Counselor can provide you with information on how to calculate constructed weight without weight tickets if you have descriptive inventories.
Can I be reimbursed for Professional books, papers, and equipment (Pro Gear)?
Yes. Continental, if requested will weigh PB&E separately, providing you with separate weight tickets and inventories. If separate weight tickets cannot or were not provided, check with your counselor to see if you can submit form DD1701 for a constructed weight estimate.
In all cases you must notify your TMP counselor in advance of shipping that you will have pro-gear to claim in your shipment.
Can I make multiple DITY/PPM moves? How am I compensated?
You can make separate DITY moves, but your reimbursement will be based on the combined weight of the shipments.
What if I need to file a claim for loss or damage? Who do I contact?
In the unexpected event that there is damage or loss to your shipment, the mover's liability is limited to the type and declared value of the shipment. If you choose to purchase coverage through the mover, they will provide you with the information and forms to submit a claim.
Important Note: The Military's DITY/PPM program can change at any time. Continental attempts to keep the information in this FAQ up to date. ALWAYS contact your transportation counselor for the latest information related to your specific move.
