Alaska Shipping Methods

Alaska is an expansive state. The methods used to transport household goods to, from and within Alaska can take on many forms.  The decision to ship via a particular method (mode) can be controlled by:
  • Location and distance
  • Accessibility
  • Availability of service
  • Weather
  • Cost
  • Safety
Some of the more common forms of shipping to, from, and within Alaska are:

Roll-on-Roll-off (RORO) Steamship
Also known as “through-van” service, Continental International provides door to door transport of your household goods. Loaded in a Continental Van Lines trailer, each shipment is individually inventoried and then padded using cloth pads. The trailer is transported via a RORO (roll-on-roll-off) steamship especially designed for moving trailers to and from the Alaska marketplace.  Continental International then performs the final delivery to the new home. This seamless service is a unique advantage to using Continental International.

Containerized Steamship Service
Shipments to and from many locations in Alaska can be performed via containerized steamship. These container ships transport 20 and 40 foot water- tight international-style containers.
Furniture is expertly wrapped in 6-ply paper pads and personal possessions are packed in corrugated containers. Household goods are often loaded into wooden vaults, called liftvans,
allowing for easy unloading from the container and direct delivery to the customer’s residence.

Barge ServiceWith the advent of steamship containers and powerful, technologically-advanced tugboats, barge service is a safe and economical means to ship to Alaska.  In many locations, barge service supplies almost all of the day-to-day products used in that region.  Commonly used to SE Alaska, shipments are coordinated by Continental, routing the container to its final destination. Barge service is available to most Alaska destinations.
Air
Shipping household goods via air cargo requires a comprehensive understanding of the process of packing, containerizing, and coordinating the shipping of your belongings. Shipping via air is often performed for:
  • Smaller shipments
  • Time-sensitive shipments
  • Shipments or to/from areas not serviced by other forms of transportation
Airlines generally base their charges on a density factor of 10.4 lbs per cubic foot. Large light items will be charged based upon higher than actual weight.
Truck/Rail/Intermodal Shipments transported to and from some Alaska locations may be transported by truck or rail. Transport, especially during winter months, is very difficult, requiring expertise in the proper loading and transport of shipments during severe weather.

Bush/Remote
Servicing shipments in remote locations may require the use of landing craft, helicopters, small airplanes operated by “Bush Pilots:, and yes, even dog-sled.  Continental has extensive experience throughout Alaska in servicing remote locations.
